Haruhiko Sugimura

Department of Tumor Pathology, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Hamamatsu, Japan

Research interests: the cause of early onset gastric cancer, never smokers’ lung cancer and adductomics, comprehensive elucidation of DNA modifications all of which are very challenging

Haruhiko Sugimura has been a Professor and chairman at the Department of Tumor Pathology, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine for 25 years and has served as a faculty member for 30 years in a city Hamamatsu, 220 km east to Tokyo and known as a birthplace of Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawai and other world-wide industries.

Dr. Sugimura started training in anatomical pathology in the Department of Pathology, the University Tokyo, just after he obtained MD and graduate from the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Tokyo, in 1982. He got PhD in pathology, by the pathological study of acute on chronic liver disease (mentor, Prof. Wataru Mori, who served as a President of the University of Tokyo from 1985 to 1989). He joined Division of Epidemiology (Dr. Shaw Watanabe), National Cancer Center Research Institute, Tokyo as a Research Resident, and moved to National Cancer Institute, NIH Bethesda, USA as a postdoctoral fellow in Molecular Epidemiology Division of Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis, led by Dr.Curtis Harris. Since then molecular epidemiology of human cancer, ranging from genetic polymorphism to adductomics to hereditary cancers, has been the greatest and the most sustained topics in his academic carrier as a pathologist. He went back as an assistant professor of Department of Pathology, the University of Tokyo, and was invited as an Associate Professor of 1st Department of Pathology in Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, in 1991 led by Prof. Isamu Kino, a distinguished GI pathologist. Dr. Sugimura introduced modern platform of molecular pathology into Prof. Kino's Department and established a very active team having several young graduate students and postdocs. However, Prof. Kino passed away by hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage in the winter of 1995 (March 1995), and Dr. Sugimura had to restart a construction of 1st Department of Pathology (renamed as Tumor Pathology) as a Professor and chairman. Currently he also serves as a vice director of Hamamatsu University School of Medicine (2020-).

His current focus of the research is a pursuit of the cause of early onset gastric cancer, never smokers’ lung cancer and adductomics, comprehensive elucidation of DNA modifications all of which are very challenging. He has put FISH kits onto the market clinically useful ones such as the one to predict ICI effectiveness.
